The historic sweet of Siena known all over the world,
The black Panforte or Panpepato has its origins as early as the first centuries of the Middle Ages, but its success takes off from the 13th century when the famous spices of panforte are added to its recipe, which also include black pepper. The recipe based on almonds, honey, candied fruits and spices is handed down over the years until, starting from the 19th century, the first panforte factories are created. The only production that has remained in business from those times is the Antica Manganelli grocery store which is today the only one to have kept the original recipe, maintaining the traditional spice blend secretly handed down from generation to generation.
Panpepato represents history and tradition by definition: it is the symbolic product of the city of Siena that is proudly produced with the IGP brand. A necessary recommendation: to preserve the panforte it must not be put in the fridge! It must be put back in the package with which it is received, the spices will then act as a natural preservative for the next few months before the expiry date.
